A meeting of the Committee for Sustainable Development was held in Babil Governorate. This is the third meeting this year, At Future University on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The agenda was discussed in the presence of the President of Future University, The President of the University of Babylon, The Assistant Governor of Babylon for Planning Affairs, The Governor’s Advisor for Planning Affairs, The Director of Babylon Environment, The President of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, The Director of the Scientific Affairs Department at Future University, The Director of the Women’s Empowerment Department in the Governorate Office, The Director of the Civil Society Organizations Department, In addition to a number of representatives of universities and departments that are members of the committee.
The meeting was chaired by the President of Future University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Magdy. He welcomed the attendees and pointed out the university’s interest and support in achieving the sustainable development goals through the various activities it implements. Such as preparing studies, research and applications, Forming committees and volunteer work, and holding meetings, courses and workshops related to achieving goals and objectives to reach the vision of the University of the Future (towards a sustainable university).
During the meeting, Eng. Khaled Kazem Al-Salhi (Director of the Sustainable Development Division at the University of the Future and rapporteur of the committee) gave a comprehensive presentation to review the recommendations of the previous meeting and the recommendations of the Ministry of Environment report related to the environmental dimension of sustainable development. With the aim of maintaining a safe and pollution-free environment.
also, Eng. Ban Zahir Raouf (Babylon Planning Directorate and Committee Secretariat) presented a report on the progress achieved in the sustainable development goals in Babylon Governorate.
The meeting witnessed scientific interventions and discussions rich in ideas and opinions that help confront environmental challenges and advance the goals of economic and social development in the governorate. Which is consistent with the objectives of the government program to improve the quality of life for citizens.
The meeting resulted in a set of recommendations, the most important of which is the launch of the Babylon Portal for Sustainable Development for Babylon Governorate through the University of Babylon website. The University of the Future was also tasked with setting criteria for granting the “Future Award” to success stories in achieving sustainable development goals in the governorate. A committee was also formed to prepare a feasibility study to create a sustainable development department within the organizational structure of Babylon Governorate. Activating the initiative of the Central Bank of Iraq regarding converting electricity generation systems from renewable energy sources, While encouraging sectoral institutions to switch to the use of renewable energy.
finally, The recommendations indicated the need to provide the Babylon Planning Directorate (affiliated with the Ministry of Planning) with the implemented projects and indicators of sustainable development goals to be included in the annual report.
